Nell Owens

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nell Owens. Nell was a senior engineer and nearly 13-year MISO veteran. Nell passed away Jan. 2 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Nell most recently served as a senior performance engineer on the Capacity Performance and Metrics team in the Information Technology department at MISO. Among her co-workers, she is remembered as a seasoned engineer, dedicated employee and good friend.

“Nell was very organized and detail-oriented,” recalls Marshall Smith, a senior performance engineer at MISO who worked with Nell for many years. “She would leave no stone unturned in working to solve technical problems and to serve the needs of our internal customers. She was also a friend and all-around pleasant person to work with.”

Nell was an active volunteer with CMG since 2012. She served as a volunteer member of the Conference Committee and later served on the CMG Board as Director from 2014-2016, and as Secretary from 2017- 2018.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this sad time,” said Amanda Hendley, managing director of CMG. “Nell was a thoughtful board member and adviser who shared her curiosity and enthusiasm with us all.”

Nell pursued a life-long passion for learning, especially in the areas of math and science. She earned an undergraduate degree in computer science and chemistry from American University in 1981 and went on to earn a master’s in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University. Before coming to MISO, she blazed a trail as a systems engineer at Apple and Sun Microsystems.

Nell’s life outside the office was equally full of passion and vigor. She was a loving mother and wife, and an avid runner who tackled triathlons in her spare time. Nell is survived by her husband, John Schild, and three children, Jake, Kordi and Luke.
