SUMMARY:ONLINE: Southwest CMG - Performance & Cost Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual meeting of the Southwest CMG. We have three presentations that look at system performance and cost optimization from different application perspectives. \n  \nCheck out the Recordings! \nNote: To view the video you must have a CMG membership. Sign up today! Click here to join for as low as $20/month. \nWatch Now\n\n#1 – VPN is the New Toilet Paper – Leveraging Helix Optimize to Understand the Impact of Employees Working from Home on Businesses due to COVID-19 \nApril 20 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am CDT \nSpeaker: Karen Hughes\, Sr. Principle Software Consultant\, BMC Software \nAbstract: COVID-19 has completely disrupted the location of where employees work.  Organizations that used to require employees to come to the office now are forced to have them work remotely\, and they have little experience in understanding the impact it will have on their networks.  Other organizations have experience with some employees working from home\, but not 100% of their workforce.  In this session we will discuss how to manage\, plan\, and validate your network with Helix Optimize.  It will show 4 actual use cases that BMC IT leveraged in order to properly plan for the increase in remote workers\, understand the impact on their network\, and model business continuity scenarios.  Learn what data and metrics are needed to be collected\, where to get the from\, and how to analyze them. \nAbout the Speaker:  Karen Hughes has worked with the BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization product line since 1996. During that time Karen has had many roles including QA\, development\, marketing and solution engineering. Prior to BMC\, Karen worked for AGFA\, a division of the Bayer Corporation as a software developer\, (utilizing her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science) and focused her efforts on coding automation tools for their engineering department. Karen has tremendous domain knowledge\, is a subject matter expert on Capacity Planning and is certified by ITIL as an ITIL Capacity Management Practitioner. \n  \n\nWatch Now\n\n#2 – Save MSUs and Reduce Run-Times for Analytics and MXG Reporting \nApril 20 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm CDT \nSpeaker: Paul Massengill\, Systems Engineer\, Mainframe Analytics Specialist\, Luminex Software \nAbstract: The mainframe team of a Fortune 500 Transportation Provider was tasked with conflicting goals: (1) increase the frequency and variety of reporting and analytics\, and (2) avoid an upgrade of their already overtaxed mainframe. Learn how you can apply their success with off-host processing to your operations for faster analytics and MXG reporting\, all while retaining mainframe control of scheduling\, execution and security. \nAbout the Speaker: Paul Massengill has spent most of this 30-year IT career in Solutions Architecture and Data Analytics for Mainframe and Open Systems.  He spent his early years in IT working for top tier banks in Storage Administration\, Capacity Planning and Performance Tuning.  For the last two decades\, Paul has specialized in using Data Analytics coupled with customer business forecasts to bring Enterprise solutions to many TOP 100 customers.  He provided these solutions while working for companies such as Wachovia\, Bank of America\, StorageTek\, SUN\, Oracle\, Hitachi and currently Luminex Software. \n\nWatch Now\n\n#3 – How to Apply Modeling and Optimization to Select the Appropriate Cloud Platform \nApril 20 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm CDT \nSpeaker: Dr. Boris Zibitsker\, CEO of BEZNext \nAbstract: Organizations want to take advantage of the flexibility and scalability of Cloud platforms. By migrating to the Cloud\, they hope to develop and implement new applications faster with lower cost.  Amazon AWS\, Microsoft Azure\, Google\, IBM\, Oracle and others Cloud providers support different DBMS like Snowflake\, Redshift\, Teradata Vantage\, and others. These platforms have different architecture\, mechanism of allocation and management of resources\, and sophistication of DBMS optimizers which affect performance\, scalability and cost.  As a result\, the response time\, CPU Service Time and the number of I/Os for the same query\, accessing the similar table in the Cloud could be significantly different than On Prem. \nIn order to select the appropriate Cloud platform\, we use modeling and optimization. \n\nFirst\, we perform a Workload Characterization for On Prem Data Warehouse. Each Data Warehouse workload represents a specific line of business and includes activity of many users generating concurrently simple and complex queries accessing data from different tables. Each workload has different demand for resources and different Response Time and Throughput Service Level Goals.\nSecondly\, we must collect measurement data for standard TPC-DS benchmark tests performed in AWS Vantage\, Redshift and Snowflake Cloud platform for different sizes of the data sets and different number of concurrent users.\nDuring third step we use the results of the workload characterization and measurement data collected during the benchmark to modify BEZNext On Prem Closed Queueing model to model individual Clouds.\nAnd finally\, during the fourth step we use the Model to take into consideration differences in concurrency\, priorities and resource allocation to different workloads. BEZNext Capacity Planning optimization algorithms incorporate Graduate search mechanism to find the AWS instance type and minimum number of instances which will be required to meet SLGs for each of the workloads. Publicly available information about the cost of the different AWS instances is used to predict the cost of supporting workloads in the Cloud month by month during next 12 months.\n\nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Boris Zibitsker is a CEO of BEZNext. His focus is on the development of performance assurance\, performance engineering\, dynamic performance management and long-term capacity planning software tools for big data\, data warehouse and cloud applications. He is a member of SPEC Big Data Research Group. Boris consults with many Fortune 500 companies\, and he manages Capstone projects for graduate students in MS in Analytics at University of Chicago. Boris a Honorable Doctor of BGUIR and during last 5 years he was a co-chairman of Big Data Advanced Analytics Conference. \n\n  \n#4 – Expecting the Unexpected \nApril 20 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm CDT \nSpeaker: Kareem Mroue\, HelpSystems \nAbstract:  The medical device manufacturing field is one of high risk and high demand. Manufacturers often experience peaks and valleys in the demand for their products and therefore are required to remain flexible in their operations to accommodate these fluctuations. Indeed\, the situation that we are in right now show that these peaks can be massive and unexpected. Additionally\, these companies are highly averse to risk.  Producing defective products will not only cost a company the confidence and loyalty of medical professionals in the field but could also initiate costly regulatory infractions and in some case can even cost the lives of patients. For these reasons it is imperative that a medical device manufacturer possess the tools and abilities necessary to educate themselves regarding their needs in personnel\, materials and equipment for various levels of demand. \nOur presentation aims to show a case study from last year\, interestingly many months before the current crisis\, for creating a plan regarding the management of the technical equipment associated with highly risk averse manufacturing.  The case study will use Capacity Management methodologies (including tools) within an enterprise environment to aid in the what-if planning of on-premise equipment augmentations as well as the utilization of public-cloud platform elasticity.  The desired outcome and deliverables being an understanding of the investment necessary to accommodate various peaks in demand\, as well as a method in providing the needed documentation to execute such an investment within an enterprise environment. \n

This presentation will put new events in the context of older better-known threats that we have had to deal with in the past. Is there “nothing new under the sun”\, or are these new and unique? \n About the Speaker: \nCharles Reddan is the campus program chair for Computer Science and Technology at Colorado Technical University. His background is in operating system development and support\, computer networking\, and performance analysis & tuning for MCI\, AT&T Bell Labs\, EDS and HP. Of necessity\, many debugging issues and performance related issues have led down into the murky world of security issues. \nMorning (2) \nFirst Bite of the AI Apple: Capacity Planning for AI deployments \nRick Lebsack \nIBM Corporation \nAbout the Presentation: \nThe discussion of AI solutions has exposed the requirement to plan for capacity.  Historically\, most enterprise workloads come with a degree of consistency along with repeatability from run to run. Well\, in this new age of developing AI assisted applications the development side of the equation has changed. No longer will a test run have consistency\, no longer will resources be shared so that utilization is the primary measure of efficient use of resources. \nThere are two events in the journey to AI where the capacity planner will get involved — initial creation of the resource pool and ongoing measurement of efficiency. This presentation will introduce one approach to capacity planning and ongoing measurement of an AI resource grid. Hopefully we will have spirited discussion on this new topic for capacity planning. \nAbout the Speaker: \nRick Lebsack has been active in IT circles around Denver since 1982.  We could say he cut his teeth on the 3081 processor.  He has worn many hats in his career from SE to Consultant across mainframes to storage to open systems to systems management. He has experience with all.  Currently Rick is an Executive Systems Architect in Denver where he covers the map on Infrastructure and the Software it takes to enable it.  In his spare time he is currently a board member and past-President of CMG working to sustain and enhance the CMG experience for all. \n Noon Keynote \nIs Machine Learning the Solution to Your Capacity Management Challenges?* \nCharles Johnson\nSyncsort Corporation \nAbout the Presentation: \nToday’s organizations continue to search for ways that technology can provide improve their IT business processes and to find ways IT can provide competitive advantage. Machine Learning is one of the tools that has begun to deliver breakthroughs in delivering the sort of improvements that companies are continually searching to find. \nThere is an increased use of Machine Learning in Capacity Management and Workload Optimization processes. \nWe see an increasing desire in the marketplace for a better understanding of Machine Learning and how it works. Specifically\, there is a need to understand how combining Machine Learning and Capacity Management work together to dramatically improve their Capacity Management efforts. \nJoin us to learn: \n\nWhat is Machine Learning?\nKey terminology used when working with Machine Learning\nBenefits of Machine Learning for Capacity Management\n\nAbout the Presenter:  \nCharles is a Senior Technical Consultant for Professional Services at Syncsort. He has over 30 years professional experience in computer systems performance engineering\, capacity management\, systems\, and database administration. Charles has worked in many industries including Outsourcing\, Financial and Insurance \n* – Keynote and Sponsor \nAfternoon (1) \nAnsible – System Administration at Scale \nRonda McCain \nIBM Corporation \nAbout the Presentation:  \n When Distributed Systems made their stage entrance several decades ago\, System Administrators were dealing with a few interconnected servers. Not a problem for the heroic System Admin.  However\, the ‘few’ became ‘dozens’.  “Dozens’ became ‘hundreds’\, and in some cases\, ‘thousands’.  Maintaining server populations at this scale became the natural domain of automation. \nAnsible provides a flexible approach to automation and execution on accounts.  It provides a straightforward path to cloud implementations. \n About the Presenter:  \nRonda McCain has a background in both Mainframe and Distributed Storage. She has been with IBM 20 years. Ronda is an experienced Senior Technical Staff Member (STSM) with over 36+ years of demonstrated history of working in the information technology and services industry. In 2019 Ronda moved into the IBM Automation Innovation team where she is leading a major initiative for North America in the deployment of Ansible Automation. Ronda has been involved with RM-CMG for many years and volunteered as a board member. \n Afternoon (2) \nHow to Scale in the Cloud \n(Chargeback is Back\, Baby!) \nNeil Gunther\, Ph D. \nPerformance Dynamics \nAbout the Presentation: \nThe need for system administrators—especially Linux sys admins—to do performance management has returned with a vengeance. Why? The cloud. Resource consumption in the cloud is all about run now\, pay later (AKA “chargeback” to mainframers). This talk will show you how performance models can help to find the most cost-effective deployment of your applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The same technique should be transferable to other cloud services. \nAbout the Presenter:  \nNeil Gunther\, M.Sc.\, Ph.D.\, has been a member of CMG since 1993. In 1994\, he started his own research\, consulting\, and education company: Performance Dynamics (perfdynamics.com). The skills required are often learned over many years and are dependent on multiple\, often homegrown\, tooling. In the modern hybrid cloud world\, the ability for a capacity planner to understand and advocate for the mainframe is essential as workloads become interconnected and less predictable. The session will cover the skills needed by the modern capacity planner on the mainframe\, including how the increased use of analytics and machine learning technologies help inform decision making and ensure the mainframe remains a key part of the enterprise architecture. \nRealize Mainframe Optimization and Risk Avoidance through Reliability\, Resiliency and Repeatability \nBio \nExperienced Software Sales Manger \nComputer engineer with over 30 years of experience in the software industry \nMore than 20 years in systems management \n14+ years experience with IBM software \n  \nMary Book\, MLC Software Client Leader\nIBM St. Louis\, MO  mabook@us.ibm.com  314-324-8345\nAbstract \nTailored Fit Pricing \nTailored Fit Pricing was announced in May 2019 as a new option for licensing z Monthly License Charge software.  The differences between this new ‘consumption based’ model will be discussed\, in contrast to the most currently used sub-capacity “Four Hour Rolling Average” methodology in use today. \nBio \nMary Book is an MLC Software Client Leader\, responsible for helping clients in the Retail and Travel & Transportation industries in the US with their mainframe software needs.  Mary has extensive experience with IBM software in all areas of sales\, technical sales and management; she has led Proof of Concept teams on application development and analytics software on both mainframe and distributed platforms.  Mary is a resident of St. Louis\, MO. \n  \nMark Wallen\,  z/OS System Installation and Upgrade Technical Specialist\nIBM Poughkeepsie\, NY     mwallem@us.ibm.com\nAbstract \nzOS v2\,4 Upgrades & Other zUpdates \n Upgrading to z/OS V2.4 – Planning Actions.  Time permitting\, Mark can discuss zOSMF Installation Strategy. \n Bio \nMark Wallen is a member of the z/OS Development organization in IBM Systems in Poughkeepsie\, New York. His current responsibility includes z/OS release upgrade and installation. \n  \nCliff Koch\,  N.A. zSystems Software Sales Leader\nIBM St. Louis\, MO     cjkoch@us.ibm.com\nAbstract \nOpening up System z – API Enablement & Management \nWe realize that our clients have a huge investment in Z and they still have a huge amount of their mission-critical systems that drive their business on a day to day basis on Z. Because of that\, we believe that this hybrid approach is the right one to help you get the most out of the existing investment you’ve got. In general\, we see the days of rip and replace long gone. It’s too costly\, it takes too much time and ultimately\, if everything works as planned\, after two or three years\, you still have the same base capability that you did before. The world is moving way too fast\, the lines of business need action now. So\, what you see here today\, is really a simple story that lays out the strategy to unify connectivity to System z\, open up the platform\, and securely manage in hybrid cloud world. \nBio \nCliff Koch has over 15 years of experience with IBM.  Most recently\, Cliff has been focused enabling digital transformation towards hybrid cloud computing services for IBM System z customers across all industry sectors in North America.  Providing solutions that evolve\, expose\, optimize and manage System z and Linux systems\, spanning Dev/Ops\, zAPI Enablement\, Cloud & Cognitive Patterns\, Block Chain\, Cyber Security\, Production Operations… Performance Management/Analytics\, Automation\, Machine Learning\, and zOS Storage Management solutions. \n

SUMMARY:Ohio Valley CMG Fall 2019 Conference
DESCRIPTION:Agenda \nOhio Valley CMG is planning our fall conference. This meeting will focus on IT areas other than mainframe. How do you manage a heterogenous IT? What are the issues with moving to the cloud? How are empathy and storytelling important to performance management? These and other topics are currently being planned. The full slate of presentations is still being worked on but we do have a date: September 26th\, 2019. Admission is free but we do ask that you register so we can make sure we have sufficient food available. We’re still getting the details of all the presentations\, but we’re sure it will be a great day! \nBMC will be our sponsor and will have two presentations: \nBuying and Managing Cloud Resources.  It’s Complicated.  \nWith the need for agility\, scalability and reduced costs\, companies are counting on cloud computing to help with their IT and digital transformation.  But without the right planning and tools\, companies will not and are not achieving these goals.  According to Gartner\, about 80 percent of the organizations adopting cloud are overspending.   Learn what makes managing cloud costs so challenging. \nControlling Cloud Costs. (Vendor Lunch Session) \nManaging and especially saving on cloud costs requires visibility into daily spend – across all cloud service providers – and the ability to adopt new optimization techniques and plan for upcoming spend.  Learn about how BMC Helix Cloud Cost can help you optimize and control your cloud spend and operational budgets using algorithms which have been industry leading for a decade. \nJacob Hinton (Nationwide Insurance) Empathy and Storytelling’s Role in Performance Engineering \nWe have a tendency to geek out on the numbers\, assume business partners know micro level details of their product\, and assume others read our summaries of findings the way we do. Viewing and retelling the results from a different perspective can positively impact communication with product owners\, developers\, and customers. \nJohn Flanders (DataDog) Observability and the 3 Pillars (Logging\, Metrics\, and Traces) \n A common mistake that engineers can make is to look at each of the pillars in isolation\, and then simply evaluating and implementing individual solutions to address each pillar. Instead of looking for a holistic approach. We can discuss the challenges we’ve seen organizations go through when moving to the cloud. \nVamsi Kondapalli (Grange Insurance )  – Monitoring and Managing a Heterogenous IT Environment \nPresenting  Enterprise Performance at Grange. This will be a high level of how Grange monitors and troubleshoots performance issues in the Distributed environment \n  \nAttendance is free\, so register now! \nstart at 9:00 and finish before 4:00 \n

Some changes need to be made for Tuning\, others for clean-up\, and still others because the goals are outdated. An examination needs to be performed for planned environmental changes or changes to business priorities. The point is that there are many reasons to open up the WLM service definition for examination and potential changes. During this presentation\, Peter Enrico reviews the different reasons to roll up your sleeves and analyze your WLM service definition. During this presentation\, you are sure to learn a lot about a wide variety of areas related to WLM management on z/OS. \nThe speaker\, Peter Enrico\, has strong and diverse experience with the IBM zArchitecture platforms\, and a solid background in z/OS\, Workload Manager\, Parallel Sysplex\, UNIX System Services\, and WebSphere e-business performance. Peter also has extensive experience measuring\, analyzing\, and tuning z/OS systems\, Sysplexes\, and subsystems. Peter’s abilities extend beyond just z/OS performance and capacity planning. He is considered a highly qualified and effective communicator and seminar instructor. \nPeter is the lead designer and developer for Pivotor®. Pivotor® is a web-based z/OS SMF performance data mining\, reporting\, and analysis solution for daily\, weekly\, monthly\, and yearly z/OS performance and capacity reporting. Since Pivotor® also includes a subcomponent to extract SMF data\, it is a very powerful SMF data reporting and analysis solution. \nPeter regularly teaches z/OS performance classes and as a member of Enterprise Performance Strategies\, Inc.\, he works as a performance consultant for companies interested in optimizing their performance z/OS systems. Due to his diverse and unique set of both technical and communication skills\, on a regular basis\, many customers\, vendors\, and even IBM\, tap Peter’s zArchitecture\, z/OS Workload Manager\, WebSphere on z/OS\, e-business\, Parallel Sysplex\, and UNIX Systems Services performance knowledge. \n  \nTitle: Microseconds Matter – Optimizing the Value of Your z Systems Processor with the IBM DS8880 Mark Wells – IBM \nDiscussing the value of minimizing DASD response times from a lost CPU processing time perspective and how IBM focuses on that aspect through our z and DS8000 co-developed synergy functions. Including current offerings including zHyperwrite\, zHyperlink and our use of Flash technology in the current iteration of the DS8880s. \n  \nMark Wells is an Executive IT Specialist working in the United States. As a Client Technical Specialist since 2005\, he provides storage solution design\, technical consulting\, and implementation support to his customers. He has extensive experience on the DS8000 platform in large-scale replication environments. Mark has worked for IBM since 1997 in various roles and has worked in the IBM System z® and Enterprise environments for over 30\nyears. He is co-author of three IBM Redbook publications\nIBM DS8870 Copy Services for IBM z Systems\nIBM DS8870 Copy Services for Open Systems\nIBM DS8870 Data Migration Techniques \n  \nLunch and Demo Provided by Enterprise Performance Strategies\, Inc.\, Creators of Pivotor® \nPeter Enrico – Enterprise Performance Strategies\, Inc.\, Creators of Pivotor®\nPivotor®\, z/OS Performance reporting for today! Better\, faster\, easier…. Smarter.\nThis will be a demo of the EPS product and how to get an analysis of your data. \n  \nTitle: WLM – Deciding Between Velocity Goals and Response Time Goals – Peter Enrico – Enterprise Performance Strategies\, Inc.\, Creators of Pivotor® \nWLM Velocity and Response Time goals are the most proper goal types for most workloads in the z/OS environment. Deciding which one to use is typically very straightforward. Long-running work should be assigned velocity goals\, and short running work should be assigned response time goals. However\, there are other deciding factors. For example\, the frequency of transactions\, the amount of CPU consumed by the workload\, the relative number of using and delay samples\, and more. During this back-to-basics presentation Peter Enrico will help you better understand velocity and response time goals\, considerations when choosing each\, and some measurement and tuning tips as well. This presentation will also touch on the topic of whether or not response time goals should be used for CICS and IMS transactions\, or if it’s better to allow the regions to be managed towards velocity goals. We hope to see you there. \nDirect questions to Greg_Scriba@bmc.com

SUMMARY:Ohio Valley CMG and Central Ohio Mainframe Users Group Conference
DESCRIPTION:Ohio Valley CMG and Central Ohio Mainframe Users Group are teaming up to deliver you a full day of great mainframe performance content on Thursday\, May 16\, 2019. This is a no-cost event for COMUGers\, OHVCMG members\, and guests who are IBM customers or IBM business partners. \nWe’ve put together a great agenda. To attend\, simply register by 5/10\, for the low\, low cost of $0. \n \nThe primary meeting location will be the IBM campus in Dublin Ohio\, with the satellite location being Progressive Insurance in Mayfield Village Ohio. BMC and IBM have sponsored breakfast and lunch. \nAgenda: \n08:00 – Gathering and breakfast (Sponsored by IBM) \n08:30 – Introductions and opening remarks (Monte / Scott) \n09:00 – Monte Bauman – Moore’s Law… More MIPS… More Better \n\nThe numbers\, they do tell a tale. This talk will examine the evolution of CMOS microprocessor technology on the mainframe platform. We will examine the intriguing relationship between MIPS and MHz\, and between transistors\, chips\, and cores. We will observe the past and current effects of “Moore’s Law”\, and we will look at equations (yes\, equations!) suggesting how to combat computer science physics. Microprocessor engineers have quite a challenge ahead\, what will they think of next\n\n10:10 – Susan Fassette (Erie Insurance): Insight into how Erie Insurance “SPlunks” the Mainframe \n\nIn this session\, you’ll learn how a Fortune 500 Insurance Company uses Ironstream and Splunk to monitor mainframe performance and capacity data real-time. The inclusion of filtering criteria on dashboards allows for easier\, quicker reporting. Details including how to create exception and audit reporting as well\, historical trending using drill-down capabilities\, lessons learned\, recommendations\, and tracking adoption rates will all be discussed.\n\n11:20 – Don Zeunert (BMC): Understanding MLC Cost Impact of Performance and Capacity Management \n\nOur old methodologies are obsolete. Managing for best response time or postponing hardware upgrades is not what is driving IT costs. We need to start managing the rolling 4hr MSU MLC costs. Do you know what is driving your MLC costs? You might be surprised at what and how easily you can cut them by 10% without any additional software. This session will discuss common issues and mechanisms available to solve them with PR/SM\, WLM\, and other simple changes\, without hurting SLAs.\n\n12:30 – Lunch and a discussion with our sponsor\, BMC: How do you like to learn about Mainframe performance topics? \n13:30 – Scott Chapman (Enterprise Performance Strategies): Revisiting WLM Options for the Modern Mainframe \n\nWLM was introduced in the early 1990s and most sites implemented goal mode in the late 90s or early 2000s. A lot has changed since then. New WLM features have been introduced. Options and features are enabled (or not) either when defining a new policy or when a new feature becomes available but then never reviewed for applicability in the face of significant changes in the hardware and software environment.\nJust like regularly reviewing your goals\, revisiting your WLM options periodically is a good thing as well. Join Scott Chapman in this session as he reviews the WLM options and shows how one long-standing recommendation is now perhaps skewing results in a counter-productive fashion.\n\n14:40 – TBD – COMUG User Session TBD \nTimes and order subject to change \nAttendance is free\, so register now! \nMain Location \nIBM Columbus / Dublin Branch Office\n6060 Britton Parkway\nDublin OH 43016 \nDirections \nHead to Dublin area via I-270 (northwest quadrant of greater Columbus).\nExit I-270 onto Tuttle Parkway and head west (outside the loop).\nTurn Right onto Emerald Parkway (1st big light past the highway interchange).\nTurn Right (right away) into the IBM Sterling Campus.\nTurn Right (right away) to park near Building ONE. (6060 Britton Plwy) \nLook for signs providing entry assistance.

This session will provide a history of events relating to the progression and current direction of Cybersecurity and Privacy and shed some light on what we should look for with future technologies and methods to take control of our individual security and privacy. \nAbout the Speaker: \nChristopher Gorog is the Lead Faculty for CS/IT/Cyber Security at Colorado Technical University\, CTO of BlockFrame Inc.\, he is the founder of Logic Central Online and the host of the New Cyber Frontier Podcast.\, Published Author\, Board of Advisors to Cyber Institute of the National Cybersecurity Center\, Board of Directors at Cyber Resilience Institute\, BlockChain SME to Colorado Legislator\, and Research Partner at both Arizona State University and Colorado State University Pueblo. \nChristopher is a prior Navy Nuclear Engineer and has 25+ years in engineering facets including Nuclear Engineering\, Computer Engineering\, Civil Engineering\, Electronic Design\, Critical Infrastructure\, Computer Science\, Information Technology\, and Cyber Security. \nHe holds a BS in Computer Engineering\, a Masters of Computer Science with a concentration in Computer System Security\, and a Masters of Business Administration from Colorado Technical University and is a candidate for PhD at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Considered an expert in the field of cyber security he has numerous publications and releases in Technological Era Leadership\, and in nearly every aspect of cyber security. His primary focus has been developing best practices for designing next generation cyber security by the integration of business cyber risks and cyber physical systems using cryptographic key management. \nAs the evolving world of technology continue to touch our lives\, the next generation of cyber security needs to include the millions of micro-controlled devices which automate and add comfort to our lives. Christopher is bringing his expertise in both cyber physical systems and business infrastructure together. His programs and research are utilizing blockchain technology for logistics\, and cyber security solutions to the secure and enable privacy to massive amounts of IoT devices. \nMorning (2) \nCyberInsurance – Part 2\nDarla Lindt\nThe Woodlands Financial Group \nAbout the Presentation: \nThe unparalleled convenience and increasing dependence on technology has spurred on a new risk exposure.  Cyber insurance is new to the insurance market compared to other lines of cover; however\, it is evolving to meet these modern exposures.  Cyber Insurance is a key strategic consideration in an organizations cyber resilience profile.  Darla Lindt\, CyRM is a leading cyber insurance expert educating business leaders on cyber policies as part of their cyber protection plan. \nThe speaker extends earlier concepts of CyberInsurance and Risk Assessment with actual use cases from current customers. \n“Cyber Insurance is the lifeline to businesses that have experienced a cyberattack…it’s that important”\, Darla Lindt\, CyRM \nAbout the Presenter:  \nDarla Lindt\, a designated Cyber Risk Manager (CyRM)\, serves the National Cyber Exchange (NCX) as the Director of Risk Management\, offering nearly 30 years of experience in Leadership\, Business Development and Strategic Planning. Darla is the Branch Owner of TWFG Insurance Services\, an independent insurance agency specializing in cyber insurance. Extending her reach beyond advising clients\, Darla is a dynamic presenter helping various groups gain valuable understanding of cyber insurance. Darla equips Business Owners\, C-Suite Executives\, and Board of Directors with the necessary tools to position their companies with a competitive edge by incorporating cyber insurance in their cybersecurity profile. \nNCX: The National Cyber Exchange is a non-profit member organization providing a communication platform by way of our website\, NCX Forum\, Mobile Apps and ISAO.  This communication platform serves as a trusted resource for cyber information featuring Subject Matter Experts\, Webinars\, Trainings\, Information\, How To’s and most notably a National Alert Notification capability which has demonstrated a high impact on awareness. \nThe state of our Nation remains extremely vulnerable to cyber attacks.  We need to rapidly advance the cybersecurity movement in order to secure our Nation.  This is not just the responsibility of our Government Agencies but of every individual utilizing technology.  Cybersecurity begins with each individual taking responsibility to steward the opportunity technology affords us.  Starting with increased awareness\, the right information\, training and tools; NCX endeavors to participate in equipping the nation\n \nNoon Keynote \nKeynote Presentation* \nTo Be Announced \nCharles SCHWAB Corporation \nAbout the Presentation: \nThere are two presentations being offered by our sponsor.  The sponsor has asked that we help in choosing the one right for us. \nThe first presentation choice is “Preparing for a Bear Market”.  While we’ve had quite a run (Spring 2009)\, there’s no assurance the bull market will continue.  History\, however\, suggests that one could beset us in the next several years or months.  None of the prior bear markets snuck up on us; each provided some warnings\, if we were looking for them.  The defensive posture a prudent investor can take can dramatically reduce the adverse impacts of a bear market.  Precursor indicators of a bear market and things you can do to defend your portfolio are discussed. \nThe second presentation choice is a rather standard discussion of fixed income choices for a retirement portfolio that is either about to be used\, or is in active use.  Active and passive portfolio strategies are discussed. \nOK.. now it’s up to you … which one would you like to hear about?  Let us know (soon). \nAbout the Presenter:  \n(TBD) \n*- Keynote Address and Sponsor \nAfternoon (1) \nProject Enigma: Exploring the AI Continuum\nRick Lebsack\nIBM Corporation \nAbout the Presentation:   \nThe Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Deep Learning (/AI/ML/DL) domain has moved from High Performance Computing (HPC) scientists to everyday conversation. Language and technology of Cognitive and AI solution flavors are spanning infrastructure options — System z\, POWER and x86. Fold in the DL frameworks and algorithms and whole new taxonomy and considerations need to be understood. There is a continuum where all of these platforms can work together — be it training performance\, development functionality or scoring latency. This overview session will explain\, explore\, document and place the continuum of AI approaches and use cases into context for non-data scientists. . \nAbout the Speaker:   \nRick Lebsack has been active in IT circles around Denver since 1982.  Could say he cut his teeth on the 3081 processor.  He has worn many hats in his career from SE to Consultant across mainframes to storage to open systems to systems management… he has experience with all.  Currently Rick is an Executive Systems Architect in Denver where he covers the map on Infrastructure and the Software it takes to enable it.  In his spare time he is currently a board member and past-President of CMG working to sustain and enhance the CMG experience for all.  \nAfternoon (2) \nFirst Bite of the AI Apple: Sizing an AI deployment\nRick Lebsack\nIBM Corporation \nAbout the Presentation:  \nThe discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions has exposed the requirement to plan for capacity. There are two events in the journey to AI where the capacity planner will get involved — initial creation of the resource pool and ongoing measurement of efficiency. This presentation will introduce one approach to capacity planning and ongoing measurement of an AI resource grid. Hopefully we will have spirited discussion on this new topic for capacity planning. \nAbout the Presenter:  \nRick Lebsack has been active in IT circles around Denver since 1982. \nCost and Registration Options: \n(A continental breakfast\, a buffet lunch\, and beverages for all two meals are included in the registration fee – meat and vegetarian options will be available for lunch) \nAnd\, as a bonus\, we’re hosting an off-site meet-n-greet immediately following the seminar – still trying to get a sponsor for this\, but attend anyway.  The off site Happy Hour location will be announced during the afternoon session. \nPre-registration fees:                          Pre-registration options \n(NONE… NONE…NONE)                (see below) \nOur ability to offer this event cost free to attendees is due to the generous support of our sponsor\, Charles SCHWAB.  Our sponsor representative and corporate champion is Andrea Larson\, VP – financial consultant.  You can contact Andrea at: \nAndrea.Larson@Schwab.com\n9899 Schwab Way\,\nLone Tree\, CO 80124\n(720) 895-3409. \nSeating is (still) limited; make your on-line reservations early.  PLEASE send us an email that you intend to come so we can plan accordingly.  Send your intent to: \nblaine@acm.org\nor\ndave.halbig@gmail.com \nAbout CMG \nThe Computer Measurement Group is a not-for-profit\, worldwide organization of IT professionals committed to sharing information and best practices focused on ensuring the efficiency and scalability of IT service delivery to the enterprise through measurement\, quantitative analysis and forecasting. \nCMG members are primarily concerned with performance evaluation of existing systems to maximize performance (e.g. response time\, throughput\, etc.) and with capacity management where planned enhancements to existing systems or the design of new systems are evaluated to find the necessary resources required to provide adequate performance at a reasonable cost. \nFor more information about this meeting or for dates and topics for future Rocky Mountain CMG meetings\, please contact: Dave Halbig at (703) 652-6293.  The calendar for this and all other CMG meetings can be found at: http://www.cmg.org/cgi-bin/calendar_2010.pl?format=cal \nAre you on the RMCMG email list? SUMMARY:Summer 2018 Meeting featuring sessions on Actionable Intelligence\, Capacity Optimization\, and Modeling - ST. Louis CMG
DESCRIPTION:Date: July 17\, 2018 \nLocation: Panera Bread Co.\, 3630 S. Geyer Road\, Sunset Hills\, MO 63127 \nFee and Deadline: $25. Please register by July 14. Fee waived if you are out of work or a full-time college student with ID. \nRegistration:  All registration & payments can be made through the website at: https://st-louis-cmg.ticketleap.com/2018-summer-conference/     For alternative payment arrangements contact: stlcmg@cmg.org \n  \nSponsored by \n \n  \nThe Summer 2018 STLCMG meeting will feature:\n9:15 – 10:15:  Actionable Intelligence Demands ACTION to Address Business Risk  – Ben Davies\, Senior Consultant\, Moviri \nA conversation that explores the investigation mission you SHOULD be on as a capacity manager or performance manager\, and shows tools and techniques to leverage senior level authority to drive ACTION. Every investigation should result in some documented action. Every investigation should be focused on business risk\, stated as business risk\, and addressed as business risk. \n10:30 – 11:30: Capacity Optimization Tool: What you should expect from a good capacity optimization tool and a surprising benefit of having a good tool – Ben Davies\, Senior Consultant\, Moviri \nThis is a conversation about what to expect from a capacity optimization tool. We use BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization in our examples\, but that tool is not the focus. And we discuss that with good tool and various data inputs\, the tool becomes a unique data set “different and apart from the sum of its parts”\, which provides significant business value\, independent of the original capacity mission. \n11:45 – 12:15: A Word from our Sponsor – Moviri \n12:15 – 1:15: Lunch & Networking \n1:15 – 2:15: Modeling and Forecasting Part 1 – Dr. Michael Salsburg \nAlthough most computing environments are heterogeneous\, computer system modeling is\, in most ways\, platform neutral.  The same techniques and tools can be used to model zSeries\, Unix / Linux\, and Windows.  At the heart of these models is the essential queueing network.  This two-hour presentation provides the details of the essential queueing network\, including the necessary statistics that need to be collected from the system\, as well as various modeling techniques that yield insights that cannot be gleaned from observing the actual computer system.  Once the model is validated\, it can be used to explore “what-if” scenarios where either the workload or the underlying configuration can be changed in the model so that the resulting service levels can be observed.  If time permits\, an additional section on the subject of time series estimation and forecasting will be presented.  This course will not teach you everything you need\, but it will give you’re a full survey of the various approaches with a full bibliography for future reference. \nMichael Salsburg is an independent consultant\, focused on IT performance measurement\, analysis\, modeling and optimization. Previously\, Dr. Salsburg was a Unisys Distinguished Engineer and Chief Architect for Unisys Technology Products. He was for many years an international thought-leader in Cloud Computing and Agile Development processes. \nDr. Salsburg has been awarded four international patents in the area of infrastructure performance modeling algorithms and software. In addition\, he has published over 70 papers and has lectured world-wide on the topics of Real-Time Infrastructure\, Cloud Computing and Infrastructure Optimization. In 2010\, the Computer Measurement Group awarded Dr. Salsburg the A. A. Michelson Award – its highest award for lifetime achievement. \nDr. Salsburg received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Pittsburgh in Mathematics in August 1972.He received his Masters of Science from the University of Delaware in Computer Science (Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence) in 1982 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from Drexel University (Probability and Statistics) in 1992. \nDr. Salsburg is extremely active in the local Philadelphia music scene and often plays with various bands\, including the legendary Ferko String Band. You can find music clips and videos at www.msalsburg.com. \n2:30 – 3:30: Modeling and Forecasting Part 2 – Dr. Michael Salsburg \n3:30: Closing Remarks \nImmediately following the meeting\, we will host a Performance Analysis Relaxation Sessions (PARS) at Helen Fitzgerald’s located at 3650 South Lindbergh Blvd.\, Sunset Hills. Take a breather\, network with other attendees\, or just relax after a long day.  Enjoy complimentary hors-d’oeuvres and drinks.  You will receive two complimentary drinks \n  \nCannot attend?
