I’m not worried about Skynet (even though an AI program wrote this abstract)! This presentation will provide a framework for thinking about AI\, clarifying its capabilities and limitations. By understanding that current AI primarily functions through sophisticated pattern matching and detection\, we can better discern which tasks and challenges AI can effectively address and\, crucially\, which it cannot. This framework will demystify AI’s impressive feats\, revealing them as complex pattern recognition rather than genuine understanding or consciousness\, and ultimately dispel fears of a technological singularity. Presented by Larry Strickland\, DATAKINETICS \nAI-assisted risk\, resilience & performance management for mainframe with IBM Concert With a newly launched integration\, Concert + Z aims to help hybrid SecOps teams understand application performance degradations to assess risk\, manage enterprise compliance holistically\, and accelerate change-related troubleshooting to be more resilient. This session will be beneficial to mainframe executives\, application owners or anyone in SRE\, compliance\, performance\, and/or Z architect roles. There will be a product demonstration\, and we’ll openly ideate new integration opportunities for driving value across infrastructure/application teams. Presented by Andrew Bowker\, IBM \nOptimizing Application Performance with AI: A MAT-Driven Approach Traditional performance tuning struggles with dynamic workloads. AI transforms this process by enabling automated\, intelligent optimization.\nThis session explores how Broadcom’s Mainframe Application Tuner (MAT) leverages AI to:\n – Detect inefficiencies and optimize resources\n – Identify performance bottlenecks in real-time\n – Provide actionable insights for faster issue resolution\nReal-world case studies will show successful AI-driven optimizations. Attendees will learn practical strategies to enhance application efficiency and adaptability. Presented by Gashaw Tsegaye Shawo\, Broadcom \nFuture Proofing Mainframe Applications Explore how Bank of Montreal (BMO) is driving enterprise-wide innovation through its strategic adoption of IBM’s watsonx platform. In this session\, Amelia Aroda (BMO) and Jay Manickam (IBM) will share insights into the start of BMO’s AI journey on the mainframe. Learn how this partnership will strengthening mainframe capabilities\, improving skills and knowledge transfer for talent\, and setting the foundation for the future of AI in financial services. Presented by Amelia Aroda\, BMO\, and Jay Manickam\, IBM \nGenerative AI for Mainframe Code Assistants Presented by Milandeep Shergill\, IBM \nProactive Reliability: The Role of Machine Learning in Observability The SRE role is increasingly expanding into the mainframe environment to gain a comprehensive view of application flows and performance. As a result\, observability tools have become essential for mainframe operations. The next phase of this evolution is the integration of machine learning with observability\, bridging the gap between enterprise and mainframe monitoring. This session will explore this trend and discuss available tools\, from Broadcom’s mainframe-specific WatchTower Platform to enterprise solutions like Splunk\, DataDog\, and more. This is an excellent example of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI). Studies reveal that diversity in participation produces better outcomes and more robust technologies. \nThe use of Open Source software and APIs helps users and administrators of databases gain significant value in analyzing the functionality and performance of their specific database products. This is also an excellent avenue to help modernize the Mainframe. \nThe establishment of a connection to a database via a REST API (with optional Open Source ZOWE features) and combining it with an Open Source time-series database coupled with a dashboard visualization package\, create an “Embrace Open”. This Embrace Open enables users to view system and/or performance data\, enables users to implement and automate warnings and recommendations to avoid system risks\, and provides flexibility to leverage modern\, user-friendly tooling to improve the user experience. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll take a look at implementation techniques to satisfy a performance monitoring use case\, using open-source tools to visualize performance metrics produced by an API. Our example will be based on the Zowe API for an IDMS database\, but these techniques are general and can be applied to any database product (e.g. Db2/IMS/Datacom) that reveals performance metrics through a REST API. \nTom Halinski\, Principal\, Client Services Consultant at Broadcom \nThomas Halinski has been a Mainframe Value Manager\, a Technical Services Consultant and an Assistant Project Manager for Broadcom\, Inc. for the past several years. He supports the Sales Team for the Mainframe Software Division’s primary solutions and plays a key role in promoting and deploying open source tools for the modernization of the mainframe arena. Elisabeth holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from New York University. \n  \n \nThe Subtle Art of Misleading with Statistics\n3:30 PM \n“Lies\, damned lies and statistics.” While true\, only statistics allow easily allows you to lie to yourself.. \nLet’s explore how statistics can sometimes trick us into believing something that’s not true. This isn’t always done intentionally; we mislead ourselves without realizing it. We’ll look at how focusing solely on recent events\, choosing specific data to look at\, and making assumptions about the size of a group can lead us to the wrong conclusions. We’ll show examples of how graphs and numbers can be used in misleading ways. The presentation aims to teach you how to look at statistics more critically\, understand their limits\, and avoid fooling yourself with numbers. \nDave McAllister\, Sr OSS Technologist\, NGINX \nCurrently providing technical OSS insights for NGINX\, Dave talks about the advantages of microservices and orchestration in solving distributed systems challenges\, especially with open source. However\, the true power of diversity is unlocked only when organizations move beyond mere representation to foster environments of equity\, inclusion\, and belonging (EIB). This presentation will challenge individuals and industry leaders to not solely focus on employing diverse teams but to ensure that these individuals thrive through equitable practices\, inclusive cultures\, and a genuine sense of belonging. \nNicole Nwakalor\, Client Services Consultant\, Mainframe Software Division\, Broadcom \nNicole Nwakalor is a technology professional with expertise in mainframe database systems and data management. Transitioning from a background in civil engineering to mainframe technology\, Nicole has held diverse roles in fintech\, consulting\, engineering\, and non-profit sectors.
