CMG Honors its Industry Leaders for their Contributions to the Field of Computer Service Delivery, Performance Analysis and Capacity Planning

TURNERSVILLE, NJ, February 6, 2009 - The Computer Measurement Group (CMG), the IT professionals responsible for planning, measuring and managing the world's largest IT infrastructures, announced today a number of industry leaders who were recognized at CMG'08 for their contributions to the field of computer service delivery, performance, and capacity management.

CMG awarded "Best Papers" to the following individuals:

  • Richard Campbell - Strangeloop Networks - For his paper titled, "Scaling Strategies and Tactics - The Strategy: Specialization, Distribution or Both?"
  • Charles T. Foy - Siemens Medical Solutions - For his paper titled, "Say Goodbye to Post-Mortems. Say Hello to Effective Problem Management and Increased Availability"
  • Peter Johnson - Unisys - For his paper titled, "10 Ways to Slow Down Your JAVA Applications"
  • Denise P. Kalm - CA, Inc. - "A Kalm Approach to Capacity Planning - Road Rules"

The "Best Paper" is picked from a small set of papers that the conference paper referees acknowledge as they read and evaluate the submissions for the conference.

CMG awarded the A. A. Michelson Award to the following individual:

  • Dr. Neil J. Gunther, Performance Dynamics

Dr. Neil J. Gunther received the prestigious A.A. Michelson Award for his analysis of SMP performance characteristics as well as for his development of Guerilla Capacity Planning, which provides guerrilla-style tactics for doing performance analysis, system sizing, and capacity planning in today's challenging business environments.  Many of  Neil's papers are available on CMG's CMG Public Proceedings page.

Albert Abraham Michelson was known for his technical accomplishments in measuring the speed of light and for his role as teacher and inspirer of others. CMG presents this prestigious award to recognize and encourage the same combination of technical excellence and professional contribution found in only an exceptional few.

CMG awarded the Mullen Award to the following individuals:

  • John Van Wagenen - Caterpillar Inc. - "So You Want to Manage Your Z-Series MIPS? Then Detect & Control Application Workload Variance!"

The J. William Mullen award is given in memory of past CMG president Bill Mullen. This award recognizes his contributions to CMG and the profession of information technology. The award recipient is an individual who exhibits both technical excellence and an engaging presentation style.
