by Mary Karlins
The Portland Area CMG (PACMG) meeting was held on June 10, 2009, at Con-way Incorporated in Portland. The meeting was sponsored by Sysload Software, which provided breakfast and lunch.
Mary Karlins and Anastasios Kondilis from ADP Dealer Services presented Linux System Health Metrics and Data Visualization. They described a monitoring repository that collects and stores data from a number of Linux client systems and the reports that are used to visualize the data collected. They also showed a case study of how the reports were used to diagnose a performance problem that was fixed by a processor upgrade.
Emmanuel Sauvion from Sysload Software gave a technical presentation on Performance Management in Virtualized Environments. He gave an overview of the technologies used by IBM AIX, VMware ESX, and Sun Solaris for virtualization and described how they manage the processor, memory and I/O.
After lunch Rob Shiveley from Intel Corporation discussed Trends, Platforms, and Technology Focus. He described how Intel has moved from increasing the processor speed to multi-core processors to get performance improvements. He presented a roadmap for the Intel Itanium and Xeon processors and described the chip architecture for each of these processor families.
The next PACMG meeting will be Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at Con-way Incorporated.
