It's been nearly 30 years since my first CMG Conference. Yup, 30 years! How things have changed since my first ... there was only 1 track; PowerPoint and similar tools didn't exist yet for presentations, so there were lots of typewriter-based slides; text editors were used to create papers; graphics were at best hand-drawn. Total attendance was about 300, there was no exhibitor area, and the ice-sculptures during PARS were the big deal. Over the first few CMG conferences I attended, we endured hardships like food poisoning at lunch one day, and a bomb scare that caused the hotel to be evacuated!

But from the beginning, one of the great advantages of attending a CMG conference is how you are presented with so much valuable, practical information in sessions that you just can't find anywhere else. Attendee experiences and findings in a single highly collaborative environment make CMG'07 a must-attend event. So many times I've been told that a single pearl of wisdom found at CMG made the week worthwhile! Plus, you can customize, filter and narrow your focus down to selective topics to suit your specific business needs.

What will CMG'07 in San Diego be like? Well, there will be 7 parallel tracks over a 5 day period. Here's an unofficial breakdown by subject:

Plus an incredible set of 14 Workshops on the Sunday prior to the actual conference. We're also planning several professional seminars that will be running side-by-side with the conference. For the first time this year, authors submitted presentations with speaker notes, and these will be published on the conference proceedings CD in their entirety, and are distributed at the conference when checking in.

With the help of a great set of diverse subject area experts, we've assembled a rather impressive set of invited speakers that will discuss topics that are relevant and topical to today's business needs. We've also integrated Exhibitor and How-To Sessions into the program for attendees to get that needed expertise on how to master a tool or a service they are planning to put into use back at home. We've sprinkled the program with a number of exciting Panel Sessions that are sure to draw large crowds and lots of provocative thought!

We are excited that our sister CMG organizations throughout the globe are sending their own Best Paper winners. Considering that CMG'07 includes breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks and a buffet dinner at PARS each night, your basic needs will be well taken care of. And we are going way beyond those ice sculptures at PARS this year: we're planning a cruise thru the San Diego harbor, stand-up comedy, a 60s surf-sound band, and game night. CMG'07 will keep you engaged: morning, noon and night! Plenty of opportunties to network and socialize with fellow CMG attendees while you assimilate the shared learnings of praticising performance experts.

Returning home after my first CMG, I decided to take the time to summarize all of the high points from the sessions I attended. I knew this summary would be great to look back at for reference and to refresh my understanding of the new information I learned. With my key highlights summarized, I e-mailed my co-workers with the information in hopes of providing benefit for them as well. With the rich content of CMG'07 in San Diego, I'm certain that there will be instant ROI payback! My trip report should be amazing, and my co-workers will know immediately that they missed the single best event in systems/application management this year. So don't miss the boat ... check out what will likely be the CMG conference that others will be measured against in the future! I hope see all of you in San Diego in December!
