Monitoring approaches

Monitoring of computer hardware, software and applications can be provided via a single family of monitors or point products. New technologies are often monitored by point products first and so the staffs that manage those technologies may only have these point products available when needed. The point products may also provide tools with more specific in-depth capabilities. Suites of monitors from one vendor have advantages in consistency of approach. Once a suite is integrated in an environment, the integration (event management, problem management) can be leveraged across all technologies. Currency of support is another issue. Point products are more focused and might be expected to keep pace with the monitored technology while suites may need to prioritize multiple changes. Suites might be supported by a cross-functional group while point products would likely be controlled by the group that supports the monitored technology.

What are the advantages and disadvanatages of taking these approaches?
