(thanks to Steve Guendert, CMG'07s Subject Area Chair for Storage)
The storage management and storage performance program at CMG’07 promises to be one of the best lineups of storage sessions in recent years, featuring a wide variety of storage topics, with sessions for everyone regardless of platform. CMG’07 has both open systems and mainframe-centric storage sessions, with topics ranging from DASD to tape to storage networking. We are pleased and fortunate to be able to welcome Dr. Gilbert Houtekamer back to CMG who will present "The DARK side of FICON." Other industry leaders include:
1) Tom Clark - New Developments in Storage Area Network Protocols. Tom will review recent innovations in SAN transport protocols, including iSCSI/iSER, Fibre Channel, Fibre Channel over IP, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCOE). Also known as Data Center Ethernet, FCOE is of particular interest because it enables convergence of storage and LAN traffic on a common infrastructure.
2) Randy Kerns - Performance Considerations for Archiving Data. Archiving data has been perceived as simply moving data off primary storage when it is unlikely to be needed again. Performance considerations are important to implementing a strategy and meeting requirements, and involve understanding the characteristics of the archive system as well as the nature of what constitutes archiving of data. This outstanding session will highlight the important performance considerations for archiving data and will use real-world examples to aid in understanding.
3) Bill Gray - A Queueing Analysis of Selected Performance Issues with Virtual Tape and Robotics. Bill examines three important issues surrounding virtual and robotic tape systems.
4) Greg Schulz - Storage and Networking Technologies Update. Greg will talk about the exciting new technologies to expect in the marketplace for 2008.

5) Steve Guendert "Understanding the Performance Implications of Buffer to Buffer Credit Starvation in a FICON Environment: Frame Pacing Delay". Steve will review BB credits including current schema for allocating/assigning them. The presentation will discuss the one way available to detect BB credit starvation on FICON directors, and focus on the concept of frame pacing delay and its impact on performance. Finally, Steve will outline 2 new concepts: a mechanism to count BB credits actually being used and dynamic allocation of the BB credits.
This is just a sampling of the storage content for CMG’07. We look forward to seeing you there! Remember, CMG is the one single practical conference that covers all key performance-related topics. With over 150 sessions related to performance; it simply allows everybody to find something interesting and directly applicable. Participants will network together, become immersed in new products and services at our world-class Exhibitor Expo, and share experiences with their industry peers in a setting not available anywhere else! With innovation being the most sought after theme for vendors this year, CMGers will be treated to new technologies applied to their problems by our exhibitor partner community.
